Happy 51st birthday to Mandi! As her birthday approaches, Mandi and Amani are reflecting on a goal setting exercise that has been effective for her: setting birthday resolutions. In this mini episode of Adventures in Business, Amani and Mandi look at what resolutions Mandi set for her 50th birthday, what great results she got, and why birthday resolutions can be even more impactful than the ones we set at the start of a new year.
Mandi’s Birthday Resolutions Journey
For her 50th birthday, Mandi decided to create what she calls BB 50 – a personal challenge designed to help her feel more comfortable than ever in six key areas of her life:
Mental
Emotional
Nutritional
Spiritual
Physical
Financial & Business
Instead of overwhelming herself with giant goals, she broke things down into micro goals she could track every couple of months. Things like:
Morning meditation
Nightly journaling
Bike rides once a week
Not eating past 7 p.m.
Setting financial goals with her advisor
Scheduling focused writing time
Some of those goals became lasting habits, while others served their purpose and fell away. But together, they gave her structure and accountability throughout the year.
The results? Mandi is down nearly 60 pounds, has a better handle on her thoughts and energy, and feels more intentional about who she spends time with.
Growth One Resolution at a Time
For Mandi, the key has been asking one simple question: How do I want to feel tomorrow?
That mindset shift has influenced everything: what she eats and drinks, how she spends her time, who she surrounds herself with, and even how she talks to herself. She’s discovered that being thoughtful about her choices helps her build a healthier, happier, more balanced life.
As she looks ahead to her 51st birthday, she’s planning to take time at a San Diego meditation center to set her new BB 51 goals.
Why Birthday Resolutions Work
Unlike New Year’s resolutions that often fizzle out by February, birthday resolutions are deeply personal. They’re tied to a milestone that’s all about you, not just the calendar. And because they happen once a year, they give you a natural checkpoint to reflect on your growth and set meaningful intentions.
Amani shared that he and his friends also set annual goals – not at New Year’s, but during their yearly trip to Las Vegas. They focus on three personal and three professional wins from the past year, along with areas they’d like to improve. With over a decade of documented goals, it’s become a tradition that keeps them accountable and inspired.
A New Way to Think About Resolutions
Whether it’s your birthday, an annual trip, or another meaningful date, you don’t have to wait for January to set goals that matter. By anchoring resolutions to a moment that feels personal, you’re more likely to stick with them – and celebrate the progress you’ve made.
So the next time your birthday rolls around, consider giving yourself more than cake and candles. Give yourself the gift of reflection, intention, and a fresh set of birthday resolutions.
