Our celebration of 200 episodes and 3 years of podcasting continues with this mini episode! In this minisode of Adventures in Business, Mandi interviews Jeremi Duru, professor of law, lawyer, and Amani’s friend. From awkward middle school days at Tacoma Park Middle School in Maryland to professional careers in academia and beyond, this episode is funny, heartfelt, and full of appreciation for Amani.
Jeremi Duru and Amani Roberts: A Friendship That Started in the '80s
Jeremi and Amani met way back in the mid-'80 – Jeremi was in 8th grade, Amani in 7th – and the two have been close ever since. While Jeremi didn’t know about Amani’s legendary mixtape-making skills until reading about them in his book, he did confess that everyone was making mixtapes back then… including himself.
When asked what songs would make the cut on a Jeremi Duru mixtape today? Expect some genre-spanning picks like:
"Potholes in My Lawn" by De La Soul
"Me and You" by Tony! Toni! Toné!
"Your Love Is King" by Sade
Mixed genres and all, Mandi approved (even if Amani might have some critiques).
The Power of Longevity
What stands out most in Jeremi and Amani’s friendship is the depth that only comes with time. “There’s something to be said for a longstanding relationship,” Jeremi shared. Over the years, they’ve moved from funny conversations in middle school to supporting each other in their careers as educators and creatives.
Jeremi considers Amani more than a friend – he’s family. “He’s a younger brother,” he said definitively. “Let’s not get that one twisted.”
Careers, Coaching, and Conversations
Jeremi is a law professor and author who specializes in sports law and sport’s role in society. His work explores how sports can help move society forward in positive ways. He’s written five books on the subject and regularly lectures and teaches at the university level.
Though their academic paths differ – Jeremi in law school, Amani in undergraduate education – they’ve bonded over what it means to teach, connect with students, and evolve professionally. Jeremi even offered guidance when Amani made his shift into teaching, after years in the hospitality industry.
Sports Talk and Personal Stands
Though both are sports enthusiasts, Jeremi made it clear that he was never a fan of Washington’s former NFL team name, and refused to support the franchise because of it. Now? He cheers for the Ravens, especially alongside his youngest child who is a proud fan. “When you have a passion for a team, you can’t just create it,” he explained.
Bow Ties, Pancakes, and Hope for the Future
If you’re wondering whether Amani’s signature bow ties and sweater vests have been a lifelong look – nope, they’re a more recent style statement. And while Jeremi’s not on board the pancake train (he’s a savory breakfast kind of guy), he supports Amani in all his culinary and creative pursuits.
Jeremi’s wish for Amani’s future? Simply this: “To be happy.” And Mandi couldn’t agree more.
